Manufacturing problems and cases of damage not only cause direct costs by replacing the failed components but often also very high consequential costs, for example due to interruption of operations or contamination by leaking oil. More serious than material damage, however, are cases in which life and limb are endangered, the environment is affected or customer confidence is shaken by repeated cases of damage. Damage is often caused by design or manufacturing faults or unexpected operating conditions (start-up, shutdown phases, etc.). Due to the complex interaction of chemical, mechanical and thermal influences, an assessment of the damage process is often only possible after an in-depth damage analysis.
